Webster Family Home, Coromandel

This design and build Lockwood home, built by Lockwood Coromandel, Coastwood Homes sits high above Hahei overlooking the remarkable Coromandel coastline.

There is a true sense of arrival to the front entranceway as you head up the driveway to the home. Flanked by a stone feature wall, the dedicated entry gives no hint to the interesting layout that makes the most of expansive views.

The Websters have always loved Lockwood, but this home is the first Lockwood they built. Inspiration for the design came from a Lockwood plan book the Websters had kept for years. They then worked closely with the team at Coastwood Homes to modify the design.

“We knew there were certain things we wanted to include, like a guest wing,” says Mr Webster. “We had antique furniture which was handed down, and we wanted to make sure there was space for that too, so Katie sat down with us to work it into the design.”

With the site affording panoramic views, making the most of the outstanding outlook was important, but boundary restrictions required careful planning. The result is a floor plan that fits within an arrangement of four intersecting rectangles. Gable rooflines add form to the exterior and allows for signature Lockwood raking ceilings, with gable-end windows included above the living and master bedroom wings.

“The view out the bedroom is different from anywhere in the house; it’s lovely to wake up to in the mornings,” says Mr Webster.

The impressive kitchen is finished with timber-grain cabinetry and features plenty of storage, including an upright pantry, overhead cupboards and a scullery. A large kitchen island overlooks the dining and lounge area and through large sliding doors to views of the bay below. A sizable al-fresco space with a Louvretec roof, barbeque, and outdoor fireplace offer outdoor entertaining that the Websters have already enjoyed all year round. “Because it’s right off the dining room, the outdoor area becomes part of the house.” Says Mr Webster. “Now that the weather is cooler, we have also been enjoying the small lounge as a cosy room to watch TV.”

The Websters are locals, having owned a dairy farm and orchard in the area for many years. When the time came to take a step back from the physical demands of working the land, they sold their orchard and family home to build their Lockwood on the hill.

“Initially, it was quite heartbreaking to sell our last home. We loved it. But we love our Lockwood and have no regrets now.”
