Rural Lifestyle Living in Whakamarama

With their hearts set on a Lockwood home for the longest time, these clients took inspiration for their design and build from an ex-showhome in Rotorua. The showhome was designed by renowned architect David Strachan and called the Gullwing, due to its distinctive winged rooflines.

The client brief was to incorporate a similar breezeway entrance and an enclosed entertainment area/sunroom, which would make the most of passive solar gains on their polished concrete floors.

This home boasts high clerestories and generous ranch sliders out of all bedrooms and living spaces making the most of the views and gorgeous Bay of Plenty sunshine. Solar heating has been installed to drive the hot water system, and an additional solar system delivers power to the underfloor heating. There is a Bosca wood fireplace as the other heating source in the home, which is toasty all year round.

The media room is an excellent escape for children and visitors to enjoy their entertainment without disturbing the main living area.

Cedar battens were included on the high clerestories for sun protection. A mixture of VG Pine painted soft grey and paired with white joinery work very well together on the exterior.

These Whakamarama clients strive for sustainable living and project managed their rural site by pre-planting orchards and completing much of the landscaping a year in advance of the home build commencement.

This home won Lockwood Tauranga the sustainability award as the best Master Builder’s Eco Lifestyle Design for 2016.
