This hillside family home overlooks the West Coast near the top of the North Island of New Zealand. The site was challenging with a small building platform and steep drop off to the coast. Architectural design planning to ensure the levels worked well for living, sleeping and maximising views on a small footprint was particularly important. Despite these challenges, this magnificent coastal setting demanded an equally stunning home, which Coast to Coast Homes – Lockwood Kumeu has achieved for these clients.
This contemporary family home features an open plan kitchen with a main living and covered deck area upstairs, with an abundance of light and connection to the outdoors. There is a second living room leading off from behind the kitchen, which provides a quiet spot for reading and relaxing away from the hubbub of the main social area.
The relaxing beach theme with the inclusion of aqua subway tiles carries the sea hues indoors and pairs well with the dusky pinks and corals of the mid-century styled furniture. Darker tones on the floorboards with the blonded timber walls and sarking further enhance the pared back seaside living ambience of this home.
Two sunny reading nooks are well placed to make use of the alcoves created by the centrally positioned fireplace on the end wall.
Four bedrooms, one en-suite and a separate bathroom are found downstairs with a separate toilet upstairs for convenience. A tucked away study provides a functional space in a compact yet open plan living area. Custom built bunk beds in the second bedroom downstairs look fabulous and blend seamlessly with the Lockwood timber interior.
The extensive use of white painted rustic looking barn doors with dark harder works particularly well with the polished concrete floors on the lower level.
The striking stairwell ensures there is a sense of arrival on the top floor.
