These clients decided to embark on a full design and build option for their rocky hilltop site and immersed themselves into the planning for this project. Part of this preparation was to visit as many Lockwood show homes and client homes as they could so they could get a real sense of living with the timber environment. They had built before, four times in fact, however this was going to be their first Lockwood design. An extensive list of features was collated; items they loved, wanted and needed was incorporated into their design brief, which was worked through with the local contractor.
Andrew La Grouw, current Managing Director of Lockwood, was the contractor in Nelson at the time and recalls the site being particularly tricky. He worked closely with them to get their best from their elevated Nelson site which has spectacular 270 ° views of Golden Bay, but needed extensive retaining walls and ground works to accommodate their sophisticated double storey design.
The owners are a social couple, so the top of their needs list was a large entertainment area for friends and family with great indoor-outdoor flow, three bedrooms and a separate media room.
They chose a cedar-clad exterior paired with white joinery and a blonded interior finish to their timber. As you walk through the front doors into the double volume entry which leads your eyes up a spectacular timber staircase, your senses are enveloped by warmth and light.
Floor to ceiling windows have also been used extensively which deliver unobstructed views to the lush hillside greenery and ocean beyond, creating a sense of connectedness with its natural environment. Kwila decking off the master ensuite includes a boardwalk to a private spa pool, also enjoying uninterrupted views of the city and its surrounds.
