Totally off-grid remote island living

Designed for island living, this home needed to be eco-friendly, water-efficient, solar and weather-resistant, with all components arriving by boat and barge from the Lockwood factory in Rotorua. After the clients spent time exploring options with various architectural service providers, the inspiration for this design came from the Lockwood Coromandel Show Home – The Verandah.

Strict rules on waste and environmental impact were also part of this tight client brief. An extensive array of photovoltaic panels on the roof provide most of the electricity needed to power this entirely off-grid, remotely located holiday home. Large tanks have been placed behind the house to store collected rainwater.

Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors along the entire living and bedroom areas allow for spectacular views back to the mainland. There is a fresh clean look to the interior styling which is in keeping with its beachside location.  The use of grey, beige and darker shades combine to create a contemporary coastal theme.

The living area has been upgraded to blonded knot-free timber which further enhances the beachside aesthetic.

The master bedroom en-suite is an idyllic retreat occupying the far end of the house and has its own private deck. Custom-made bunk beds with cleverly built-in storage space provide extra room for children and visitors.

The rustic outdoor shower and boardwalk are perfectly placed to wash off sea- soaked togs and sandy feet before coming inside.

A shining example of a Lockwood home designed to perfectly suit its site and client’s lifestyle.
