Modern Masterpiece

This couple wanted to build a new home for their next stage of life. The site was subdivided off the land next to the house they have been living in for close to 40 years and was part of their extensive park-like garden. The design was pencilled out by the couple carefully considering how the home will nestle into the existing landscape and then brought to the Lockwood Design Studio for further refinement.  Accessibility, thermal comfort, security, and low maintenance were key requirements, and the owners took inspiration from contemporary European architecture by incorporating soaring gable rooflines.

The home includes a large garage workshop space nestled into a hill and the green roof is engineered to allow for additional car parking. Quartzite flooring is used throughout the first floor and is also used for shower wall linings.

A lot of thought was put into space lighting design. Gallery-grade lighting systems are used to showcase the extensive art collection, and in lieu of using ceiling-mounted lights, custom designed pelmets hide LED strip lighting around living spaces casting warm ambient light upwards.

The home has underfloor heating and ducted air conditioning powered by energy-efficient heat pumps controlled by a smart home interface that also looks after security and lighting.

Moving from an almost 40-year-old Lockwood home, the couple are delighted by the thermal performance of their new home. “This house is so much warmer in winter, and cooler in summer. If there is one thing we would change, we wouldn’t have installed the ducted heat pump system, as we have not needed to use it”.

The couple’s meticulous planning extended beyond the home itself to the surrounding environment. They began landscaping and planting before construction started. Now, the home feels perfectly at one with its surroundings, as if it has always been a natural part of the landscape.
