The Langdale home was built by Tuohy Homes, Lockwood Wellington, for Campbell and Lee on a lifestyle property they subdivided from original farmland. Campbell had spent 12 years preparing, planting native trees and planning the views they would enjoy from the new home. The Lockwood Caribbean design was a perfect fit for the setting, with the aspect framing the stunning rural vistas.
Tuohy Homes’ designer, Ross, spent time with Campbell and Lee to tweak and perfect the original concept into their ideal forever home. The fourth bedroom was not required, so the space was absorbed to create a generous scullery and large laundry/mudroom, a practical addition for rural life. “It’s great that you can sit and kick off your boots,” says Campbell. Lee adds, “The internal access from the garage into the scullery is very handy for things like groceries.” The main suite was also reworked to provide access to the ensuite through the walk-in wardrobe.
The design is open plan, yet it has well-defined areas. “The roofline helps to break up the spaces, with the beams in the ceiling,” says Lee. “We love that it all flows out onto the deck.”
Despite having different ideas for the interior design, they say the decision-making was easy. Lee had her heart set on a bar in the kitchen, which turned out to be a wonderful idea, and the lowered table of the bench has become a well-used space.
It was important to Lee and Campbell to support local business where possible. The farmhouse style furniture is thanks to Cream Design in Otaki, “Wendy at Cream design provided dining chairs, cow hide and throws and cushions, and will continue to deck us out!” says Lee, “We used Curtain Easy from Otaki for curtains and blinds, we wanted to buy local and they were great.”
The clear blonded timber interiors are crisp and light and are mixed with Eldorado Stone features in the entry and fireplace. Three different colours were used for the stonework, an inspired choice that created an organic yet stylish look. The same Eldorado stone mix was used for the exterior columns and the front entrance feature wall to create continuity between the exterior and interior.
Moving into their new Lockwood was a big change from the older, two-story farmhouse they lived in, and they have been enjoying the efficiencies of a modern Lockwood home. “The electrician suggested putting in two heat pumps to supplement the fireplace, but we’re glad we didn’t do that; we don’t need them at all. The house is so warm,” says Campbell. “And the timber creates a feeling of warmth too.”
For Campbell and Lee, it was important that all aspects of the design and build were taken care of, and they were impressed with the entire process with Tuohy Homes. “The whole team was amazing. Jeanette helped a lot with the interior choices. Everyone on site was so polite and helpful and happy to be there, it was wonderful to see.”
The transition to their new Lockwood home has not only provided Cambell and Lee with a beautifully designed, low maintenance home, but has also enhanced their rural lifestyle, allowing them more time to enjoy their hobbies of horse riding and hunting. With every detail thoughtfully considered, they now enjoy the perfect blend of comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, making their dream forever home a reality.
