The 2024 Toi Rotorua Arts Festival is underway, running from November 1st to 10th, sharing a wealth of creativity and talent from around the Bay of Plenty. With a packed schedule of events, exhibitions, artist talks, and open studios, the festival celebrates artistic diversity within our community.
As part of this celebration, the Lockwood Rotorua Show Village is hosting a special exhibition featuring over 60 works from talented local artists. The exhibition opened with a launch event on Friday, November 1st, attended by renowned New Zealand artist, Dick Frizzell. Frizzell judged the winners for two categories: Best 3D and Best 2D artwork.
Peter Edwards took home the Best 3D award with his piece Te Rotoiti i kite ai a Ihenga, crafted from kauri and whalebone on layered tempered glass. Kristina Rachacova won the Best 2D category with her oil-on-canvas painting In Your Arms. Additionally, Lockwood is sponsoring the People’s Choice Award, with a $600 prize for the winning artist and a $400 prize draw for one lucky voter. This award will be announced at the exhibition’s close, giving festival-goers a chance to support their favourite piece.
The Lockwood exhibition is just one of many exciting opportunities at the ToiBOP Art Festival. Visitors can explore the works of 29 local artists in their studios, experience live artist demonstrations, attend thought-provoking talks, and enjoy performances and workshops. There are also several exhibitions throughout Rotorua, highlighting the incredible range of talent within the local arts community. Guided and self-guided art trails are also available, showcasing creative works around the city.
